Bonelatch, 8, 31 and 41??

8: Bones tends to do whatever she feels like doing in general, making things and following her curiosity with the reckless abandon of someone who’s mostly just trying to have fun and make a living out of it. So in a way her work is an indulgence, making it hard to define what is and isn’t indulgent for her. She doesn’t put a lot of stock into thinking about shouldn’t and mustn’t.

31: She absolutely loves preserved specimens, and her favorite and most prized item is her authentic Saratoan skull.

41: Bones used to have two hobbies, but she turned one of them into a business. She still makes potions and experimental materials in her spare time for her own amusement, despite it now being work too. She also enjoys collecting and keeping magical specimens and studying them. She collects bones and dead creature parts from the surrounding area, as well as trying to keep and raise fairies in captivity.

Near magic hotspots, things get really wonky.

Bones protects her lungs from magic residue in the air with a respirator when she goes hunting around the hotspot (looking for dead things she might want to collect and preserve, or for raw materials to use in potions). Dime does not wear one, as she has a very high tolerance for magic normally. Even so, forgoing the respirator does not always prove to be a good choice.

Did Bones' and Core's mom give Bones the same crap she gave Core?

(by the way I switched the name back to Root, sorry about that, I ended up feeling like the name change didn’t suit her as well as I thought it would - that’ll learn me to try and change something like that years after the fact)

Well, Bones got some similar treatment, but not exactly the same, because Bones personality is quite different. Her mother liked her a lot because of her tendency to be more of a people-pleaser, which meant that while she was still treated poorly, she often got nice treatment and support (that came with a price tag) and was presented to others with pride (up until she moved to another country and stopped doing everything she was told). Root was never appreciated or supported that way because she is so oppositional and aggressive and her mother was trying to punish her for acting like an autonomous entity.

Same game, but with Bones this time. Like Dime, I have a go-to color for Bones, a seafoam green that always seems to work for me with her purple/blue skin.

Well THAT sketch certainly got out of hand!

Another sketch of Bones. Might paint this one.

I’m bored, so let’s talk about BoneLatch’s job.

Bones is an experimental potioneer. Potion making is an incredibly common practice, and many magic disciplines like Elementalism and Weaverism have their own traditions and recipes. Some even know how to mix a potion or two without knowing much about magic at all. But these potions tend to be weak or completely inert and limited in their range of effects.

People like Bones force potions to be more powerful and versatile by going much further then traditional potion recipes go in complexity, studying wide varieties of recipes, testing and of course experimentation. There aren’t a lot of individuals doing this, the normal image of potion making is one of old world nostalgia, the experimental potioneers are, to many, like if someone tried to summon demons with an easy bake oven. Except that experimental potioneers are successful if they don’t kill themselves with a bad potion or exploding equipment.

Bones, who we have already established, appears to be the most important person in my universe.

Fact: Hyssop started sitting over there with Trip to begin with because it was even more pathetic with him sitting at the adjacent table staring at them like a creep.

SCIENCE!
